Unknown

The series, Unknown, explores our perceptions of war in the digital age. The work is derived from aerial videos captured by drones in the Ukraine-Russian War and downloaded from social media. The soldiers documented in the footage are transformed into ghostly white silhouettes and screen printed on a thickly painted gray background. The brushstrokes on canvas appear to whisk away the figures and signify both the chaos of the conflict on the ground and the impermanence of human life that existed in the moment the video was captured. Further, the brushstrokes – left to right or top to bottom –  are suggestive of our passive viewing – scrolling and swiping through content.  The way we consume and create content is often fleeting and seemingly non-consequential and yet can have powerful outcomes.

By posting, resharing or simply viewing content, we unwittingly become participants in war and inadvertently promote far-off agendas from powerful political actors, corporations or terrorist organizations. The video footage is often posted for monetization, propaganda or manipulation while, concurrently, social media platforms’ monetize algorithms to boost the most sensational footage for more likes and shares. Human connection is lost somewhere along the way; and that’s where these paintings sit, at the intersection of political and commercial agendas where a moment of humanity, a struggle for survival, loss, and hope come into sharp focus. The series stands as an antithesis to the desensitization experienced daily online, and confronts sensationalism and over-consumption in digital media while providing a sanctuary; a place to foster empathy, reflection, and connection.
